Have difficulty navigating emotions at work?
"There is nothing more human than feeling, but we don't have much understanding/research of emotion. We weren't taught now to talk through how we are feeling and how to work through it." - Atlas at the Heart
How can you navigate emotions at work?
Practice deep listening.
Deep listening means we tap into the deeper meaning and unspoken needs underneath our emotions. This is something that is done with the heart and mind.
Are you feeling anxious? Perhaps the root of that anxiety is a project deadline you can't meet. Addressing this emotion might mean you ask for an extension or lower expectations on the quality of the project. You decide how to navigate this.
But practicing deep listening requires us to peel back the layers of our emotions and uncover the root. We need to spend time with ourselves in reflection to do this.
When we're vulnerable with ourselves, we can then invite others into our space. Finally, we get to show up to our team leading with vulnerability.
Deep listening always starts with us, it takes time and practice; it is also messy and nonlinear.
