The birthday questions 🎈

So my birthday is in July, and, a few years back, my friend Jenae showed me this set of questions that she and her friends answered every year on their birthdays. As you can imagine, I LOVED the idea and have used it since as part of my own birthday tradition.

In total, there are eleven birthday questions that were shared with me (and sometimes I add some more), but for this reflection email, I want to offer just one:

Who is someone you met this year that changed you?

We focus a lot on individuality in the U.S., but the older I get the more I notice the ways environments and relationships tend to create the individuals inside of them. We are forged as much (if not more) by our connections to those around us as we are by any individual sense of self. I like how this birthday question gets at this aspect of humanity, and the yearly moment of reflection the question offers. It’s useful to reflect on how we have changed for love, connection, church, group hobbies, online communities, etc. Spend some time thinking about this question and see what comes up for you.

Also, a little plug: if you are looking for a reflective space to connect with others, we’ve got a free enneagram lunch event coming up on Thursday, August 7.

Check out the event

The event will be held online via zoom and will provide a great opportunity to connect with others interested in the enneagram and also provide a space to introduce friends to the tool for the first time. This event is part of our Sway Skills series that we are starting up again in preparation for the fall.
